Just like many other rogue-likes, management and tactics play an important role to do a long and successful run in Caves.

Management

Resources in Caves can be stats, can be weapons, can be items, can be golds and emeralds. There are usually ways to expense a type of resources in exchange for another type. What resources you need is different every minute depending on your attributes(STR,AGT,LUK), your playstyle, the enemy you plan to or forced to fight with, cave types, your armor types, your upgrades, golds and emeralds... and so on.

For ranged builds, ammunition management is crucial. You can keep your bag full of ammo by purchase, using Elite Gunner Medallion, high Luck or most importantly attack effectively. And you can use some consummables that will rarely drop in the coming locations to free up spaces in the inventory. On the other hand, carry some rare items with you and recycle them for emeralds when you find a recycler.

Currency and components management

If you are playing in hard mode, spend whenever you think you need to, as each death reduces your remaining gold and emeralds by half.

Get yourself 1 to 2 bombs when starting a new journey in the shelter is usually not bad.

Components are stored automatically every time you return to shelter. Death clears all components in your inventory in all modes.

As for investing in modules and improvements, see this page.

Stats management

How to distribute the 4 skill points from leveling up is management. Obviously melee skill affects melee weapon output, and the same with ranged skill. But it takes 3 to 4 or more skill point to increase your damage by 1. The higher you attribute is, the more damage will you get per added skill point.

Blocking affects block chance, dodge chance and slightly affects defense. Choose wise to fit your build and playstyle.

Other than leveling up, you can also add your skill points with skill potions and on the yellow-light magic altar. Try to maximize exp and skill point gains in each map.

Note that even you have good stats, you will still need to rely on items to pass every location.

Fullness management

Fullness management is turn and resources management. You enjoy an extremely slow health regeneration when fullness is ≥ 20%, so feel free to feed yourself up when you have plenty of food. While if you have only little food, which especially happens in ancient ruins, it is better to only eat when hunger actually hurts you. Since the initial damage is trivial, and from 0% fullness to noteworthy damage accumulated, it takes some turns. This can help you conserve your supplies and struggle through the famine.

Inventory management

In late stages of the game, you may run out of inventory spaces.

You have limited slots in your inventory and limited maximum stack for each item, for equipment that is 1 and others can stack from few to hundreds.

Use items that reached max. stack no. , even if they are ineffective, they will usually still provide a bit help.

Tactics

You can have different tactics when you have different purpose and resources.

How do you deal with your current situation? Slay or retreat? Use 1 or 2 effective resources or abuse useless items? Play around or finish it in a few turns? There can be uncountable solutions.

Basic Tips

  1. Shoot melee enemies when they are 2 tiles away.
  2. Ranged enemies do reload and can run out of ammo, but the ammo regenerate with time.
  3. Lure ranged enemies to open the door behind which you wait and attack in melee.
  4. Make use of the faction system, enemies have their enemies besides you. Lure and KS to save ammo and effort.
  5. Leave crystal chunks alone if you have low HP or difficulty killing them in few turns.
  6. Leave crystal chunks alone, break the crystals from range when enemies are close to the crystals.
  7. Mushrooms and plants on the floor are invisible enemy indicators.
  8. Throw an acid potion on units so that you can trace them even they have turned invisible.
  9. Most invisible units remain on the same tile on casting invisibility. Use tile-targeting attacks like flamethrower, lightning scroll or bombs, can damage them.
  10. Enemies cannot see units behind obstacles like stalagmites. Thet cannot break obstacles deliberately either, so far.
  11. Teleport across obstacles to get rid of chasing.
  12. The most potion after collecting few types of potion and the potion obtained from digging gravel is likely to be healing potion.
  13. Throw a random teleportation potion on an empty tile if you run out of items and money. Just beware there is a decent chance to summon a teleporting guard/knight.
  14. Throwing an unknown potion on a weak enemies or floor is the best way to identify it.
  15. Use an unknown regular scroll when enemies are far in sight is the best way to identify it, giving that you can not predict what it is from identified scrolls.
  16. Use an unknown black scroll at the tiles adjacent to enemies 3 tiles away from you is the best way to identify it, giving that you can not predict what it is from identified scrolls.
  17. Throw an acid or fire potion, use the flamethrower or use Scroll of Barrier on the only way between you and enemies to buy you time or escape.
  18. Throw an acid or fire potion, use the flamethrower or use Scroll of Barrier on the tile between you and melee enemies 2 tiles away to buy you 1 turn of time.
  19. Activation of shields removes Burning effect.
  20. Shields prevent units from obtaining Burning effect, but does not affect fire damage from tile.
  21. Search for structures: portals, Merchant, Vending Machine or Ancient Ruins using your Radar and Map Scanner to avoid danger or to find useful resources.
  22. Purchase in shelter is more economic than in vending machine on late locations.
  23. Be prepared to anything, in Cavesrl there are moments of prosperity wherein you will find all sorts of goods, but there is also several moments of misery/famine when any mistake can cost your life.
  24. Save your health crystals, they might be better than healing potions but due to their rarity and expensive price it is recommended to use them only in emergencies.
  25. DON'T break the cracked walls at the Portal room, some Portal Guardians won't mind if you get inside the room, while others will attack on sight, so only break these walls if you are prepared to fight.
  26. If you are having difficulty in a fight, call in the Mop up squad since they will attack every other unit (except Robots) giving you time to retreat or heal while your enemies are distracted. Also they can drop some high quality loot when defeated.
  27. The Demon Grenadier and Demonic Knights have a chance to drop a Demonic beacon when killed.
  28. Using an Inversion Scroll when raiding a Spider Nest, will not only make the battle easier but also safer.

Advanced Tips

  1. Purchase REMOVE ADS
  2. Events stop if you are too far away from where they are happening.
  3. Poison effect caused by 2 spiders stack with each other as 2 seperate effects (2 poison effect icons under energy bar). While poison effects caused by the same type of food or potion does not stack, the one with higher number of turns replaces the lower.
  4. To non-armored enemies, damage that you deal equals to weapon damage shown in the weapon description windows.
  5. The Scroll of Armor Destruction can be casted to enemies 3 tiles away.
  6. Units cannot have Armor Destruction and Protection effects at the same time, triggering of either one removes the other.
  7. Elemental damage ignores defence and climbs with location levels.
  8. Critical hit ignores part of the defence.
  9. The Reflector shield may look not very out-standing, but it can be deadly on enemies. Especially in the later stages of the game when running aggressive builds, you may try to OHKO enemies with massive damage, but the part of damage that exceeds the HP of the shield is COUNTED into the calculation of the back-fire damage. Avoid damaging the reflector shield with weapons except for shock arrows (reduced back-fire damage) and grenades (character not deemed as attacker). If you suspect an enemy will have reflector shield (like the enemies with hammers in acid caves ruins), use the Type-6 'Eraser' or Type-8 'Mjolnir to kill him and avoid the shield activation.
  10. Some enemies that dash away and use health crystal only do so if their enemies are in range, even they have been sufficiently damaged.
  11. Supply Beacon drop location is affected by some obstacles.
  12. Enemies from Magic Altar require space for successful summoning.
  13. The Scroll of Death is more likely to damage you if there are no enemies around.
  14. DO NOT use the Mop Up squad to farm XP, they may be weak early in game, but the longer you are alive the stronger they will become...
  15. Always carry a few termite bombs if you are going to the Lava Caves, they may not be a powerful explosive, but can save your life if you can't find the entrance of a building.
  16. Imps might be a powerful ally but don't expect them to be a good protector.

Ways of Playing Caves

There are many ways to enjoy your adventure in Caves. The intuitive one is to repeat dying and upgrading until very thing is at high/max level which allows you to easily try different possibilities in the game without worrying about surviving :)

Another way is hardcore. Caves is developed for Hard Mode initially. You can challenge yourself how high the "furthest reached location to death counts rate" you can get in hard mode!

Last but no least, leisure play, Caves has quality graphics for you to experience a fantastic spelunking and boss-fights, or simply for killing time, in any difficulties.

These are only examples. Caves should be more fun playing in your own way!
